When you open the map of the world, you’ll clearly see that Jiaxing is located in the center of the Yangtze Delta on the southeast coast of China . It abuts Shanghai to the east, Suzhou to the north, Hangzhou to the west and Hangzhou Bay to the south. The land area of Jiaxing is 3,915 square kilometers and the registered population amounts to 3.3807 million. Under Jiaxing’s jurisdiction are two districts, namely, Nanhu and Xiuzhou, three cities, namely Pinghu, Haining and Tongxiang and two counties, namely Jiashan and Haiyan.
Jiaxing’s history is long and the culture is splendid. It is the place where the southern China ’s culture originated. As early as 6000 to 7000 years ago, the ancestors fostered the Majiabang Civilization, which is recognized as the representative of the early neolith in the downstream Yangtze Delta region and one of the origins of China ’s ancient civilization. Jiaxing fostered celebrities one generation after another, such as Mao Dun, the modern literature mater, Wang Guowei, Chinese painting master, Xu Zhimo, famous poet of Crescent Moon Styles, caricaturists Feng Zikai and Zhang Leping, Chen Xingsheng, famous mathematician and swordsman novelist Jin Yong, etc.
Jiaxing, which enjoys the reputation of both a land of fish and rice and the home of silk, has long been wealthy and prosperous. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, especially with the implementation of the opening up policy, Jiaxing, influenced by the development of Pudong District of Shanghai, the opening-up economy of southern Jiangsu Province as well as the private economy of southern Zhejiang Province, has seen a rapid progress in economy and society and an significant increase in the comprehensive strength. Currently, all the counties and county-level cities under Jiaxing’s jurisdiction are listed among the top 100 wealthy counties in China . In 2005, the whole city reported a total production value of 115,600 million RMB with over USD4,000 per capita. In 2008, Jiaxing theobtained a total output value of 181.53 billion yuan, increasing by 10.7%. The total fiscal revenue was 25.21 billion yuan, an increase by 20.4% over the same period of last year, which consisted of 12.69 billion yuan from the regular budgetary revenue of local governments, an increase of 20.4% over last year. The expenditure on research and development accounted for 1.77% of the GDP. The per capita disposable income of urban residents was 22,461 yuan and the per-capita income of farmers averaged 11,538 yuan, increasing by 11.7% and 13.5 respectively. The total level of consumer price was up by 5.2%. The registered unemployment rate in Jiaxing is3.5%, and the natural growth rate of Population in Jiaxing is 0.45%. Jiaxing, however, enjoys balanced and coordinated development, with the all-around social development in the front ranks of the whole province, Jiaxing Municipality and the five county and county-level cities having been all edged into the national advanced ranks in science progress and all of them having been honored provincial civilized cities (counties) and provincial advanced counties (cities) in education. In addition, Jiaxing has been honored as a national model city in in cultural and ideological progress, in environmental protection，mutual support between the civilian and the arm forces, hygiene and greening. Currently, the total capacity of both the nuclear power station and Jiaxing Power Plant exceeds 6 million KW.
