In recent years, hi-tech industry, equipment manufacturing industry, industry with local features and advantages, and port (river)-front industry have been developing vigorously, with economic volume increasing fast and industrial level gradually lifted. The total industrial added value in 2008 reached 97.995 billion yuan, a growth of 11% over the same period last year. The industries and enterprises above designated level completed 26.655 billion yuan of pre-tax profits, with 14.638 billion yuan being the profits. The industrial structure has been further optimized, with the gross industrial output value completed by the enterprises above designated scale being 383.943 billion yuan , a growth of 16.3% over the same period last year. The industrial clusters have been speeded up, and by the end of 2008, the four big industrial clusters in hi-tech industry, equipment manufacturing industry, industry with local features and advantages, and port-front industry had accounted for 80% of the gross industrial output value completed by all industries above designated scale, with the output value of 11 industries, including textile and chemistry industries, hitting 10 billion yuan respectively. The competitiveness of the key enterprises has further improved. By the end of 2008, the total output value of new products of industries above designated size had grown by 41.2%, with the growth rate being 24.9%  higher than that of the total output value of all products. Presently, the number of industrial enterprises above designated size has totaled 6,296, of which 577 manufacturing enterprises have realized the annual sales volume of over 100 million yuan.
