As one of the earlier opened coastal cities in China, Jiaxing has established steady trade relations with more than 190 countries and regions in the world. By the end of 2008, over 5,200 foreign-funded enterprises including more than 30 corporations among the world top 500 from 100 countries and regions, have invested in Jiaxing, and US $ 8.1bilion have been accumulatively introduced.

In 2008, total value of import and export reached US $19.833 billion, up 23.1% over the previous year. Exports hit US $ 5.729 billion, and imports reached US $14.104 billion, 29.1% and 20.8% up respectively; the export value of mechanical and electronic products increased by 33.8 % and that of high-tech products increased by 14.5 %. 242 three kinds of foreign-invested ventures (joint, cooperative and foreign-owned) were newly approved with US $ 2.287 billion of contractual foreign capital and US$ 1.36 billion of paid-in actually utilized foreign capital, a 13% rise over the last year.
