Jiaxing has been regarded as a place of wealth and prosperity, enjoying the fame as" a land of rice and fish , a home of silk". With a total output value of agriculture of 18.09 billion yuan and the per capita net income of farmers being 11,538, a growth of 13.5%, Jiaxing has been ranking the first for five consecutive years in Zhejiang Province.

In 2008, the sown area of farm crops was 5.142 million mu, including 2.9004 million mu for planting grain, the total amount of crop production reaching 1.3308 million ton. The economic crops gain quick growth and the structure of aquaculture industry is being gradually optimized. Currently the agriculture planting area involving high-efficient equipment reaches 28,000 mu; there are 143 leading agricultural enterprises of or above municipal-level, 397 farmers' specialized co-operatives, 88 agricultural entertaining zones, and 281 provincial-level pollution –free bases with the total area being 1 million mu; 285 agricultural products have passed the assessment and approval as the national-level pollution-free products, and 108 agricultural products have got the title of green foods. In recent five years, there have been altogether over 2000 agricultural products that have won the golden prize in Zhejiang Agri-products Expo, and over 26 products, including Jiangnan Raisin, Jingxiu Golden Peach (Jinxue Brand), Yunlou Pickles , have got the title of Zhejiang Famous Agricultural Products. The sales income of the agricultural products sold in Shanghai and Jiangsu Province totaled 8.72 billion yuan, with the annual export volume being 1 billion dollars.
